Less than a week ago, widely used social network Twitter Inc. (TWTR) was the talk of town after the platform was hacked by people who scammed cryptocurrency worth more than $100,000.
The hackers were mainly targeting verified accounts, whereby they gained full access of famous people’s verified accounts and tweeted on their behalf scamming unsuspecting people of their money. Notable people who were victim of the hacking include Former U.S President Barack Obama, billionaire Elon Musk, reality TV star Kim Kardashian among other famous people around the world.
Twitter now claims the hackers penetrated its system an gained full control of 36 accounts. This update contradicts its earlier statement in which the company had said 45 accounts were affected.
Additionally, the hackers not only had the ability to post tweets on behalf of the account holders but could also read direct messages of hacked accounts.
Among the accounts in questions includes the account of an elected leader in Netherlands, however Twitter says it has no information indicating any other account of an elected leader was affected by the hacking.
Twitter added that, the hackers were able to see email addresses and phone numbers of the affected accounts but they could not view the passwords. This means that a lot private user data is still at large, the FBI is also carrying its investigations on the matter.
