Russia Blocks Google News Citing Spread of Fake Information Regarding Ukraine War

Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL) owned Google has confirmed that Russia’s communication regulator, Roskomnadzor has blocked its news aggregator service Google News in Russia citing that the service allows what it terms as fake information about Russia’s military operation in Ukraine.

This development was first reported on March 24 by Interfax news agency then later Google confirmed the development.

We’ve confirmed that some people are having difficulty accessing the Google News app and website in Russia and that this is not due to any technical issues on our end. We’ve worked hard to keep information services like News accessible to people in Russia for as long as possible” said Google.

According to Interfax, Russia’s communication regulator took this decision following a request from the office of Russia’s prosecutor general.

The American online news resource in question provided access to numerous publications and materials containing inauthentic and publicly important information about the course of the special military operation on the territory of Ukraine,” said Interfax.
