Micron to Stop DRAM Chip Design Operations in Shanghai this Year

U.S based manufacturer of computer memory and data computer storage Micron Technology Inc. (MU) will be discontinuing DRAM chip design operations in Shanghai before the year is over. The company made this announcement on January 26.

According to the announcement, Micron will be closing its DRAM Engineering Group from its Shanghai Design Center next year with the completion expected to be over by December 2022. Additionally, the company said going forward the center will focus on developing NAND and SSD technology.

The company makes NAND memory chips which are used by the data storage market storage as well as DRAM chips which are widely used in data centers, personal computers and other devices.

Chip manufacturers have been at the center of U.S-China trade war which has been seeking to take away manufacturing balance from Asia back to the West. This war has been largely driven by intellectual property and supply chain concerns.
