China Shuts Down American Chamber of Commerce in Chengdu

Chinese administration has issued a directive ordering an American Chamber of Commerce located in the southwest city of Chengdu to cease operations with immediate effect. This was announced by the American chamber of commerce.

The chambers send a notification to its members that in accordance with Chinese laws and regulations it had to stop operations henceforth it can no longer carry out any activities in the name of American Chamber of Commerce in Southwest China.

The statement from Chinese authorities failed to give specific reasons why they had ordered a shutdown of the American chamber of commerce.

According to the group’s chairman, Benjamin Wang, China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) seems to be enforcing a regulation that countries maintain only one official chamber of commerce in the country.

Additionally, Wang said that they are liaising with local authorities about registration and future direction of the chamber.
