Twitter Unveils the ‘Milk Tea Alliance’ Emoji

Widely used social network Twitter Inc. (TWTR) has unveiled an emoji for the Milk Tea Alliance, an online democratic solidarity movement comprising of members from Myanmar, Thailand, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

The emoji captures a white cap set against a background of three colors representing different shades of milk tea in Hong Kong, Thailand and Taiwan. This emoji has being unveiled at a time when the movement is marking its first anniversary.

The name Milk Tea Alliance came from a twitter war after Chinese citizens accused a young Thai actor and his girlfriend of supporting democracy in Hong Kong and Taiwanese independence.

The name symbolizes the shared passion for sweet tea drinks among the three countries.

This is not the first time Twitter is launching such an emoji last year after the brutal killing of black American George Floyd, the social network launched an emoji for #BlackLivesMatter movement.

Thai activist Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal says the emoji symbolizes a global recognition of the youth led movement.

It’s important as it shows the young people fighting for democracy that the world is with them and they’re making an impact. It’s a sign that online activism can go much further,” said Netiwit.
