New York On the Verge of Legalizing Recreational Use of Marijuana

Legalization of recreational marijuana in New York has always been a bone of contention. A recent release by CNN suggests that democrats who control New York legislature have given a green light to terms of a proposed bill seeking to legalize recreational use of marijuana in the state.

Under the proposed bill, a regulatory body will be established to control marijuana sales in the state. CNN claims to have sourced this information from a New York legislature involved in the negotiations.

According to a legislative memo, this bill applies a 13% excise tax to retail marijuana sales across the state. In addition New York residents aged 21 and above will be allowed to grow the marijuana plant at their homes.

The terms of this bill are still under review but there is a high possibility that a voting in the Assembly and the Senate could be done next week on the bill.

New York is the fourth highest populated state in the United States, if this bill sails through then New York will be the 15th state to legalize recreational use of marijuana.
