Apple Strikes Deal with TSMC to Develop Micro OLED Displays

Apple Inc. (AAPL) has inked a partnership deal with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) to develop micro OLED displays. These micro OLED displays will be used in Apple’s upcoming Augmented Reality (AR) devices.

TSMC is the only company which supplies Apple with iPhone processors, according to a report by Nikkei Asia micro OLED displays are far much thinner and smaller allowing them to use less power while making them suitable for use in wearable augmented reality devices.

Citing the report, these micro OLED displays are currently being developed and they are less than 1 inch in size.

Last month, Bloomberg Business published a report indicating Apple is still working on technologies for its AR glasses codenamed N421. Citing unrevealed sources the report said the product was years away but Apple had initially aimed to launch the AG glasses on 2023.

Nikkei says this micro OLED project by Apple and TSMC is currently at the trial production stage and it’s expected to take several year before it reaches mass production stage.
