China’s iQiyi to Offer Free Movies and Shows Over the Lunar New Year Holiday

China’s online video streaming platform iQiyi will be offering free movies and television shows in some areas over the Lunar New Year holiday. The China’s equivalent to Netflix Inc. (NFLX) received a request to do so from China’s government which claims many people are staying in their homes to curb spread of the virus.

Under normal conditions, millions of Chinese usually criss-cross the country to and from their hometowns during the holiday which is the biggest holiday in the world’s most populated country.

Due to the spiking numbers of new infections, China’s authorities have already given strict measures specifically aimed at combating spread of the deadly virus during the Lunar New Year holiday season.

China’s government is worried that mass movements during the holiday will definitely result to increased new infections hence the government is advising people to stay safe and cut movements as much as possible.

iQiyi says it will be introducing a free of charge content viewing category in Beijing and nearby province of Hebei. Such services are normally restricted to registered subscribers.
