MacKenzie Scott, who is the former wife of world’s richest man Jeff Bezos said that she had donated a total of $1.7 billion in the last one year since termination of her 25 year old marriage with Jeff Bezos.
In a blog post, MacKenzie says some of the cash was donated to climate change, public health, LGBTQ rights and racial equality issues.
The two finalized their divorce in April last year, with MacKenzie receiving 4% stake in leading e-commerce Amazon Inc. (AMZN) which was worth around $38 billon then. Her stake company is now worth over $60 billion since the company has been performing superbly well during the pandemic due to increased online orders.
“Like many, I watched the first half of 2020 with a mixture of heartbreak and horror. I began work to complete my pledge with the belief that my life had yielded two assets that could be of particular value to others: the money these systems helped deliver to me, and a conviction that people who have experience with inequities are the ones best equipped to design solutions,” read part of the post by Scott.
This announcement comes a day before her former husband Jeff Bezos is expected to make an appearance before the Congress formed antitrust panel to explain on allegations that Amazon has been using its market dominance and powers to hurt small competitors in the industry.
