Hackers Penetrate Twitter Scamming More Than $100,000 of Cryptocurrency

Widely used social media network Twitter Inc. (TWTR) has said hackers managed to penetrate its internal system soliciting cryptocurrency worth millions of dollars from unsuspecting individuals.

The hackers were targeting accounts of famous people in the world in their operations. According to Twitter, the hackers took control of verified accounts of high profile people in the world then went ahead and tweeted on behalf of the account owners.

Among notable people who accounts were hacked include, founder and CEO of Tesla Inc. (TSLA) Elon Musk, Former U.S President Barrack Obama, reality TV star Kim Kardashian and Democraic Party Presidential candidate Joe Biden.

We’re looking into what other malicious activity they may have conducted or information they may have accessed and will share more here as we have it,” said Twitter.

In efforts to reduce more damage from happening, Twitter temporarily stopped some verified account from posting messages altogether. The social network said it would restore normalcy once it was certain the platform is secure once again.

According to public available records revealed by Twitter, the hackers scammed in excess of $100,000 worth of cryptocurrency.

CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, said the company was intensively working on solving the issue and they will be making public every sing detail so that everyone will entirely understand what really happened.

Tough day for us at Twitter. We all feel terrible this happened,” added Dorsey in a Tweet regretting entire unfolding of events.

Cyber security experts did not let this pass without raising concerns about how safe is the social network  which for a long time has been seen as a better option in terms of data security issues in comparison to its peer Facebook Inc. (FB) which in recent time has been hit by multiple breaches of user data.
