Widely used social media network Twitter Inc. (TWTR) has said hackers managed to penetrate its internal system soliciting cryptocurrency worth millions of dollars from unsuspecting individuals.
The hackers were targeting accounts of famous people in the world in their operations. According to Twitter, the hackers took control of verified accounts of high profile people in the world then went ahead and tweeted on behalf of the account owners.
Among notable people who accounts were hacked include, founder and CEO of Tesla Inc. (TSLA) Elon Musk, Former U.S President Barrack Obama, reality TV star Kim Kardashian and Democraic Party Presidential candidate Joe Biden.
“We’re looking into what other malicious activity they may have conducted or information they may have accessed and will share more here as we have it,” said Twitter.
In efforts to reduce more damage from happening, Twitter temporarily stopped some verified account from posting messages altogether. The social network said it would restore normalcy once it was certain the platform is secure once again.
According to public available records revealed by Twitter, the hackers scammed in excess of $100,000 worth of cryptocurrency.

Cyber security experts did not let this pass without raising concerns about how safe is the social network which for a long time has been seen as a better option in terms of data security issues in comparison to its peer Facebook Inc.
